Don't Disparage Me: The Lanham Act after the Slants Decision

Last year the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office stating section 2(a) of the Lanham Act, the section prohibiting trademarks that insult any group, was unconstitutional. The ruling came in a case that involved an Asian American rock group called the Slants, which tried to register the band’s name in 2011. The band was turned down by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office because of a law ...more »

Mythbusters: Why (Almost) Everything You Think You Know About...

Mythbusters: Why (Almost) Everything You Think You Know About Academic Law Libraries is Wrong We all know academic law library budgets are being cut, and have been for several years. Salaries and hiring have stagnated. And our physical spaces are shrinking as law schools repurpose them. But are these statements true? Are they even close to being true? This program delves into the data from academic law libraries and ...more »

Professionalism & Leadership at Every Level

Finding the right balance. Is there one?

This program would focus on the continuing debate between Open Access to Information and Privacy. Should all information be accessible? Are we talking government information? Criminal Records? Social Media? Death Records? Should all public data remain public? Is there a delicate balance access and privacy? Do we need to be better educated on how we complete profiles and what we make publicly available? Is it user education? ...more »

The Dark Side of FOIA

In the currently polarized political climate, activists have been using FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) and similar tools as a means of both achieving policy goals and intimidating speech. FOIA has been regularly used by social and environmental justice activists to expose or uncover unseemly governmental action. Now FOIA and similar tools are being used by alt-right activists to "dox" or otherwise expose individuals ...more »

Remote Reference: Expanding the reference desk digitally

I would like to see a program on strategies for providing reference services to geographically-dispersed audiences. For my immediate need, I would like to hear how government law libraries expand services to all corners of their jurisdiction using any and all forms of digital asynchronous and real-time communication, including video conference, chat, email, remote desktop manipulation, etc. It would also be useful to ...more »

Leadership Among the Challenges

It is logical to suppose that leaders in law librarianship and the larger legal information profession always had the internal ambition and support from key figures in order to become leaders. What if one has potential, but isn’t innately comfortable with leading? What if one wants to be a leader, but doesn’t have the backing from his or her supervisor and/or institution? This program will explore how to address and ...more »

Reaching Out - Outside of Our Walls

What are libraries doing to increase awareness and use of their services outside of their physical library walls? In Minnesota, we place law librarians in public libraries to provide legal reference service. We also visit public libraries to train librarians and patrons. And we travel around the state giving presentations (with a free CLE component) to bar associations. What are others doing?

Implicit Bias and Librarianship

Implicit bias (defined below) is a topic that has been discussed extensively in both scholarship and in the media in recent years, especially in the context of law enforcement and the criminal justice system. But the notion of implicit bias has implications that are applicable to all professions and in all aspects of our lives, and is quite relevant to law libraries (of all types) given that we are a service-oriented ...more »
