Reaching Adult Learners

Most of the individuals we provide education and training to are adults and have a different attitude and approach to learning. It would be nice to learn some of the techniques that are effective in keeping adult learners interested and focused.

These days some prospective employers are using resumes from social media sites. This requires a different approach than has been traditionally used. It would be nice to learn what works and what does not work when doing a resume in the abbreviated form social media requires.

The Robot Lawyer

Technology-fueled disruption has made its way into industries like healthcare, transportation, journalism and many more. At the center of this disruption is artificial intelligence ("AI"), which refers to a computer's ability to mimic "cognitive" functions such as "learning" and "problem solving" that are commonly associated with the human mind. Those familiar with the practice of law expect that AI will disrupt the ...more »

Information Governance -- What Is It & Why Should I Care?

Information Governance (IG) is a natural for law librarians. It combines Knowledge Management (we've been doing that since before the Great Library of Alexandria), IT, Records Management, Data Governance, and many other fields that we deal with on a daily basis. Yet, so many of us are not at the IG table. This intro to IG session explains what IG is, how it affects the entire organization, and where librarian skills fit ...more »

Analytics Overload

With the variety of Analytic tools and data being captured, it's important to ascertain which metrics are fundamental. What are the C people really interested in? Is the right data being captured? How are you presenting that data? Which tools are deciphering and providing the right metrics? How do you get to the heart of the data and not get caught up in the minutiae?

Teaching law practice technology/management classes

More and more librarians are being called upon to teach law practice management and/or law practice technology courses. It is so rampant that a caucus has been created on this topic. It would be great for a session or sessions to focus on: curriculum design, helpful vendors, what has worked/not worked at other schools, and what the firms want new associates to know with regards to technology.

Preventing plagiarism

Plagiarism is a fine line in law schools. We tell students not to plagiarize while also showing them forms and templates and ignoring real world reuse of materials. How do we 1) Teach students about plagiarism in an effective way, and 2) explain the difference between academia and real world practices?

Public Availability Dates of Prior Art in IPR Proceedings

IPR Proceedings are requiring additional information to determine the public availability date of a print resource (journal/conference proceeding/book), web resource, product guides and online manuals. Law firm libraries are being tasked with determining the public availability date of print resources. Law firm librarians are having to rely heavily on academic librarians and their good will. I think a program at AALL ...more »
