Researching a Public International Law Issue

Researching a public international law issue can seem daunting, but Article 38 of the ICJ Statute sets out a good roadmap as to the relevant sources to consult - international conventions (treaties), international custom, general principles, and judicial decisions. Using the IALL Public International Law Research Instruction Guidelines (which are based off of Article 38) as an outline, participants will explore the best ...more »

Workshops on the Cheap

Over the last year, members of IFLA and IALL have worked together to host workshops in Africa for law librarians there to help them build their network and strengthen their libraries. We have found that hosting these workshops can be done for a reasonable amount of money by creatively pairing with vendors and reaching out to others who share similar interests and willingness to work hard for success. This program would ...more »

Learning management in law firms

Many law firms are using specialized learning management systems to track tech and other kinds of training for attorneys and staff. These systems focus as much on offering clear tracks for professional development as presenting information (academics are more familiar with the latter aspect). I'd love to see a session about these systems - how they have been implemented, how they work, and how they are being received ...more »

Effective Feedback for Student Learning

Providing feedback to students is a critical part of the teaching and learning process. Are you doing this effectively? Grading student work often requires a significant investment of time, but are there methods to streamline this process that would allow the instructor to devote time to other aspects of the course and improve the feedback offered? What methods of feedback are being used in legal research courses to help ...more »

Revisiting Copyright and Fair Use in a Technological Era

Much as authors and publishers have taken advantage of technology to decrease costs, reach new audiences, and develop new delivery mechanisms, libraries and users should keep abreast of technology and explore how it might be deployed to expand or enhance fair uses. This program would discuss possible new paths for libraries (e.g., digitize and lend) to meet the needs of their users while maintaining the balance of interests ...more »

Managing Unconscious Bias to Strengthen Your Corporate Culture

Have you ever examined the sources of unconscious bias and how it can influence interactions with others? Have you ever understood how cultural values impact our own biases and interactions? Understanding unconscious biases and cultural awareness are critical first steps towards improving our performance, however we cannot stop there. Awareness alone does not guarantee success, but the ultimate question is how to take ...more »

CLE Administration

Has CLE become a responsibility of the firm library? I'm not quite sure the form this would take yet but I would love to see how other firms manage CLE and how we can add value to this beast.

Driving Usage of Software Tools at Law Firms

When law firms buy technology or create resources people don't use, everyone loses. Getting attorneys and their teams to actually use the best new resource at the right time is challenging. Technology is part of the problem, but it can also be part of the solution. This program will include attorneys from several law firms who are using different software products to enhance their workflow and improve efficiencies. Librarians ...more »
